In conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month which both take place in April, Saybrook’s Dr. Beth Haggett, one of the leading advocates of using Mind-Body Medicine techniques to address the trauma of sexual abuse, was featured on Cyrus Web’s Blogtalk Radio April 27.
Dr. Haggett shared that the interview was a special opportunity to share her expertise. “What a pleasure it was to have the opportunity to join Cyrus Webb on his radio show Blogtalk Radio,” she said. “He was such a gracious host and asked many interesting questions about Mind-Body Medicine in general and more particularly about Mind-Body Medicine to ameliorate the trauma of sexual abuse.”
After seeing the impact and success of mind-body treatments, Dr. Haggett, a Saybrook graduate and now a faculty member at Saybrook University’s School of Mind-Body Medicine, recently closed her private practice to focus more on consulting and speaking. Considering that sexual violence affects millions (Research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately one in six boys and one in four girls are sexually abused before the age of 18), Dr. Haggett hopes to get the word out that sexual abuse victims can heal and move past their trauma by re-discovering the joy and hope in their lives.
As she shared in her interview, her experience with Mind-Body Medicine is also immensely personal. “I credit Saybrook’s program with adding years to my life and improving my own health and sense of well-being. I also credit my knowledge of Mind-Body Medicine with helping me to recover from a recent brain surgery only four months ago,” Dr. Haggett said. “I was told to plan three to five days in the hospital but yet was ready to leave only a day and a half after surgery. I know Mind-Body Medicine can help with healing from all forms of trauma and I am thrilled to be a promoter of using it to help with the trauma to the soul caused by childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault,” she shared.
